Let Leo and me help you, I’ll explain how:

I was sure there must be a way to combine my two interests of dogs and mental health and started to look into Animal Assisted Interventions and Therapy. I was lucky enough to come across the K9 Project founded by Chris Kent, author of What a Difference a Dog Makes (http://thek9project.co.uk/) and began working with them in 2014 supporting their group work and doing 1:1 work with individuals. This confirmed my belief in the healing powers of animals and how dogs in particular can facilitate the processing of difficult emotions safely and enable people of all ages to reach their potential.

I subsequently completed a diploma in Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) to develop my skills further in using dogs as an integral part of therapy and am now an approved provider of therapy for Together for Families (Cambridgeshire’s version of the national Troubled Families programme). I have developed a programme for groups and individuals combining Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills with AAT. I also provide individual therapy to some young people in local schools.

My dog Leo has been independently assessed and approved as a therapy dog and now as well as helping dogs he helps people lead happier and more fulfilling lives. We can help people of all ages to overcome anxiety, depression, self-harming behaviours, phobias and many other mental health problems or distress. Many people find the traditional forms of therapy hard to engage with and currently even harder to access so can find that AAT enables them to access the support and help they need.

Some feedback from young people and their parents:

“Thank you for the sessions you have provided X. He has really looked forward and enjoyed them immensely. I think he has benefited a lot from them. I think it’s going to help us as parents see how we can help him more with his interactions with others.”

“Since I’ve met up with Carrie and Leo the dog, it’s made me a much more confident person. I’ve never been able to openly talk with a therapist or counsellor before and having Leo there as well helps keep my anxiety down and helps me be more honest. I finally look forward to going to be able to talk to a professional and actually trusting them. In the few sessions we have had it’s made a very big impact on my life and the way I see things that happen in and out of my life.”
